The Irritrol Kiwdial Fuse Issue

Ok – possibly the single most common issue I hit each year is this problem. First up – there is no fuse and no battery in the controller! Silly I know – to have a ‘fuse’ message and a battery symbol at the same time. The average DIY would look for a dodgy fuse or a faulty battery. What the message actually means is that there is either a fault in the controller or a fault in a solenoid. The way to determine the issue is simply to remove wires and keep resetting the controller and testing it. If it […]

I am Getting a Fuse Message on my Irritirol Kwikdial Reticulation Controller

If I had a dollar for every time I hear this… And if you have spent time looking for the ‘fuse’ then you will be frustrated because there isn’t one.. And the battery symbol with the line thru it doesn’t mean that the battery is dead, because there isn’t a battery either… Ok – so whoever designed these wasn’t thinking ease of use! What does the fuse message mean? a) You have a solenoid coil that is faulty and causing the controller to fail. b) The controller has a problem and needs replacing. Usually I can tell by looking at […]

Winter – The Control Box Killer

Its very common over winter for control boxes to die, either because the door has been left open and rain has affected the circuitry or because of power spikes. So come Spring when its time to turn the retic back on you find yourself with a dead box. Unfortunately nothing can be done for boxes affected by a power spike, but the other situation of weather damage is completely avoidable. Always keep the door on your controller closed and you shouldn’t have any problems. We can always check for the tell tale burn signs of a power spike by removing […]

My Controller Looks Like Its Working But Nothing is Coming on

So you set your controller running and everything looks right on the digital panel, but there is no water?… What’s going on?… Well if you are running your retic off the mains then its most likely that there is a problem with your master solenoid. If it isn’t working then you won’t get any water to the different stations. You can test if this is the issue by locating it, turning it on manually (usually you need to turn the coil a quarter turn anti-clockwise) and then running the system as usual. If everything works with the master valve open […]

Hunter X Core Irrigation Controller Repairs

People often ask me if they can have a controller repaired and almost without exception the answer is no – if they are faulty then they are a throwaway. Its not that its impossible, but once you have paid for a call out to remove the controller ($75+ GST) and paid a technician to fault find (around $150) and then paid for it to be reinstalled ($75+GST) you’re up to $300.00 and there is no warranty. With a new controller around $385 it just doesn’t make sense. (Sadly because I’d rather recycle than create more junk.) Recently someone asked about […]

The Fuse Message on Irritrol Kiwdial Irrigation Controller

This is one of the most common reticulation issues especially in suburbs like Butler, Carramar, Banksia Grove and Clarkson where these controllers were installed as part of the landscaping package. The first thing you should know is that there is no fuse! And the little battery symbol with a line thru it doesn’t mean there is a problem with the battery. There is no battery. The message means one of two things: a) There is a fault with a solenoid b) The controller is faulty. We can run some tests to prove which one it is, but don’t waste your […]

Converting From Community Bore to Mains in ‘The Green’, Butler

If you live in The Green Estate in Butler then you will probably have experienced the frustration most people do at not being able to control your own reticulation. You can only run tests at short times on a Saturday morning and no one can service your retic except for the designated company who charge an arm and a leg. This week I did my first conversion job in that area. I’m surprised I haven’t done more as I know the frustration people feel. This one was a direct change over which involved: a cut in by a plumber a new […]

Hydrawise Start Delay

I like techy gadgets and I’m usually the first one to buy new technology so the Hydrawise had some real appeal. However the one feature that really lets it down is the time delay between turning a station on and it actually operating. When you’re servicing sprinklers having to wait for one minute just for the water to come on means time wasted and a half hour job can become an hour. Hydrawise has sold out to Hunter now, so here’s hoping Hunter can do something to make the controller operate more efficiently. Aside from this one problem its a […]
