Most Popular Turf Varieties

Everyone has their personal favourite. Some like the hardy but soft leaf type of buffalo – the Sir Walter in the picture above or Palmetto are the two most popular. These are beautiful lawns and if looked after will really increase the value of your home. Wintergreen is also a very nice lawn but with a finer leaf. The down side to wintergreen is its invasive nature, so you need to make sure your garden beds are protected as this lawn will get into them and if it is left unchecked will be very hard to get rid of. Velveteen […]

3 Things You Need to Do on Sep 1

1. Make sure you can see the digital display on your controller. Winter is when most controllers die so this is always the first check. If it’s dead then give me a call! 2. Run a system test of each station and check that each sprinkler is popping up and that each nozzle is spraying as it should. If there are obvious leaks then it will need fixing sooner than later. Just a blocked nozzle or two you don’t need to worry about until it gets hot. 3. Check the settings on the controller and adjust the run times for […]

DIY Reticulation in Perth Soil

If you plan on doing your own reticulation then consider hiring a trench digger. I used a trenching shovel for several years before purchasing my first trencher and I haven’t looked back since. You can’t use a trencher in every situation, but if you have larger areas then it really comes into its own. It will dig a straight trench between 120mm and 450mm deep and it will cut through sand dirt easily. Its great for established lawns where digging is a real chore, but I use it on every job now and it eases the workload as well […]

Reticulation in Jindowie with Poor Water Pressure

Recently I laid the main retic line for a client in Jindowie (a part of Yanchep). I’ve written before about water pressure issues in this part of the world and today we hit the same problem again. I use Richdel solenoids 99% of the time, but today they wouldn’t seal. They need a certain amount of backpressure and the water being what it is up here I just couldn’t get them to work. I changed them for Hunter PGVs and they worked fine. I’m not sure why Hunters will operate with the lower pressure, but they seem to be the […]

This Weather…

Its been a very long hot summer, but here in WA we have done well when it comes to conserving water. In spite of some of the toughest conditions we have seen in a long time we have actually gone forwards rather than backwards. So just a reminder that the Water Corp are now asking if we will scale back our water usage by 20%. That means if you are running normal Toro pop-ups you can reduce your usage to 8 min/station. If you are using MP Rotators then you can reduce the run time to 40 min/station. Hopefully we […]

Reticulation Cut Ins Done Correctly

There are big fines for those who either DIY or do it wrong. Be sure to use a licensed plumber who does it right and you won’t face any penalty. As well as needing to be a specified distance from the water meter there needs to be a dual check backflow prevention valve installed. The image above shows one installed incorrectly which we are currently in the process of rectifiying. The simple ball valve has been connected to the elbow of the water meter rather than spaces away from it. For cut ins we recommend Andy of Orfords plumbing based […]

Reticulation Solenoid Puzzle in Yanchep

On Friday I had a call from a client in Yanchep who had installed a solenoid, but was having problems. The two stations in the back were coming on together.   So I went out to see what was going on.   What was odd was that the two rear stations came on together but they didn’t come on when the front retic station was running. Normally if a solenoid fails open it stays on with every other station.   But in this case station one came on, then station two and three together.   Odd…   So I checked: […]
