Lawn Seed?

So you’ve got a bare area in your lawn and you’re thinking of revitalising it with lawn seed? What you need to find out before doing anything is why the bare area happened in the first place. Otherwise chances are the problem will simply recur. Reasons the lawn may be bare are: – The lawn doesn’t get enough sun. – The lawn doesn’t get enough water. – There are lawn beetle in it. So before doing anything first work out what the problem is. And then it’s to the solution. Obviously ‘lawn seed’ is not the way to fix any […]

One Solenoid Stuck On

A common problem is for one station to remain on while the system goes thru its cycle. Almost invariably this is due to the solenoid on that station being faulty and being stuck open. Depending on what type of solenoid you have it is most likely going to be a faulty diaphragm. Usually it is best just to replace the entire solenoid and be sure that all will work well for a few years to come. If you wish to try and replace the diaphragm then remove the top half of the solenoid (you may be able to screw it […]

Lost Water Pressure?

Over this summer I have come across two incidences of faulty water meters in the Quinns Rocks area. On both occasions the home owners had lost water pressure to their sprinklers and had no easy explanation. After checking for faulty solenoids and searching for leaky pipes I was stuck for a solution. So we called the Water Corp and they sent out their meter testing bloke and discovered that for some reason the meter was not opening fully and this was the source of the problem. Who would have thought?… In one case it was very obvious that this […]

Why Are My Sprinklers Just Dribbling?

I went to look at a job this week where the sprinklers were working, but barely so. Each station would dribble a small amount of water, but there was nowhere near enough to run the system. What was going on?… I guess the logical cause had to be the master solenoid being stuck and thereby reducing pressure all round. However I have changed these over before only to see no change in the performance so I was cautious, even moreso because the master was buried 600ml deep, encased in bricks and covered in rocks and rubble. Not fun to get […]

My Controller Looks Like Its Working But Nothing is Coming on

So you set your controller running and everything looks right on the digital panel, but there is no water?… What’s going on?… Well if you are running your retic off the mains then its most likely that there is a problem with your master solenoid. If it isn’t working then you won’t get any water to the different stations. You can test if this is the issue by locating it, turning it on manually (usually you need to turn the coil a quarter turn anti-clockwise) and then running the system as usual. If everything works with the master valve open […]

Warranties on Control Boxes

So your control box has stopped working? Chances are it will be covered by warranty as most have two years of factory warranty and if a product simply fails we will replace it at no cost to you. However sometimes boxes fail as a result of user error. The box in the image is just over one year old and ordinarily would be replaced under warranty, except that it is evident that the digital panel has been exposed to the weather. The telltale sign is the greenish colour the panel has turned. It should be the same grey as the […]

Shared Bores and Strange Problems in Yanchep

This week I had an early morning phone call from a regular client who lives at the top of our street.   ‘Andrew – my retic is on and it won’t go off. I’ve turned the controller off but it keeps running…’   If this were a system running off the mains then we would naturally presume a faulty master and station solenoid but this was a bore. I told him to turn the bore off at the mains and that stopped the flow.   Assuming it was the electrical contactor failing I told him to get the electrician out […]

Add a Station Incompatible with Controller?

I’ve been using ‘Add a stations’ for a while now as they are great for turning one power wire into two and solving the problem of having to run a new cable. This week I arrived at a job in Ocean Reef where a 5 year old device appeared to have failed. One station would run via the ‘Add a Station’, but not the other. A couple of solenoids were also old and dodgy and in need of replacement. So I did the job, installed the new Add a Station, ran several tests and all seemed to be ok. Then […]

My Retic Won’t Shut Off

For people with Hunter X Core Controllers this is one of the most common issues and it arises because the controller is incorrectly programmed. What happens is the system comes on at 5.00am (or whenever you have set it for) runs thru the whole cycle and then does it again… and again… and again… The problem is more than one identical start time being set. By that I mean that start time 1 is 5.00am, start time 2 is 5.00am and then start time 3 is 5.00am. For some reason this confuses the machine and causes it behave in this […]
