Should I Use Netafim Dripline in My Garden?

If you want to achieve maximum water efficiency then there is no question that Netafim Dripline is your friend! Here is a job I did recently in Yanchep where new native plants had been installed and the client wanted to ensure minimal wastage of water. Now that the Dripline is in he can mulch the area. If you are on a bore then you may like to consider ‘bore line ‘, similar but not pressured compensated – which usually isn’t an issue on a bore. This dripline is extremely effective at dripping water right next to the plants and is […]

3 Things You Need to Do on Sep 1

1. Make sure you can see the digital display on your controller. Winter is when most controllers die so this is always the first check. If it’s dead then give me a call! 2. Run a system test of each station and check that each sprinkler is popping up and that each nozzle is spraying as it should. If there are obvious leaks then it will need fixing sooner than later. Just a blocked nozzle or two you don’t need to worry about until it gets hot. 3. Check the settings on the controller and adjust the run times for […]

I am Getting a Fuse Message on my Irritirol Kwikdial Reticulation Controller

If I had a dollar for every time I hear this… And if you have spent time looking for the ‘fuse’ then you will be frustrated because there isn’t one.. And the battery symbol with the line thru it doesn’t mean that the battery is dead, because there isn’t a battery either… Ok – so whoever designed these wasn’t thinking ease of use! What does the fuse message mean? a) You have a solenoid coil that is faulty and causing the controller to fail. b) The controller has a problem and needs replacing. Usually I can tell by looking at […]

My Controller Blows a Fuse

If your controller is showing a ‘fuse’ message or actually blowing a fuse then the most likely cause is the coil on the solenoid or some wires crossed somewhere in the system. The coil is the electrical component of the solenoid and when it malfunctions it causes the fuse to blow and protect the control box. If your control box doesn’t have a fuse or isn’t able to show a ‘fuse message’ then it may actually damage the box and end up causing you more $$ for a new box. The fix for this is relatively simple – assuming […]

What Causes Irrigation Controllers to Fail?

So you went to check out your control box and it has no digital display? That’s a fair sign its dead… or maybe you haven’t switched it on at the plug if its plugged in… Assuming its not a faulty RCD and that there is power to the controller, the most common reasons for failure are: Exposure to weather – sun and rain will weather the digital panel and void any warranties. The panels on most controllers are not UV stabilised so they will change colour if the door is left open and exposed to the elements. The one in […]

What Does ‘P err’ Mean on a Hunter X Core Controller?

If you own a Hunter X Core Control box and see ‘P err’ on your controller then it means nothing will work (or it may come on for a few seconds and then fail) and there are two possible causes. The first and most common is that the master solenoid coil has developed an electrical problem and is sending a fault message back to the controller. ‘p’ = pump or master valve. We can locate and replace this – problem solved. The second possibility is that the box is faulty and needs replacing. You can determine which one it is by […]

How Long Should My Sprinklers Be on For?

This is not what you want your lawn to look like! Currently the Water Authority is advertising on TV that sprinklers should be on for 10 minutes per station, which is somewhat misleading. I had a client recently send me this photo of her new lawn saying she is struggling to keep it alive on the Water Authority’s recommendations. I’m not surprised. She has Toro Precision nozzles which need to run for 30 minutes each time operate to apply 10mls. So here’s the deal… Sprinkler run times depend on the types of sprinklers used.   The goal is to get […]
