When You Break the Tap off the Water Meter

Have you ever found a water meter that either won’t turn on or off? Like the tap is just stuck? This week it happened again – about the third time in 11 years but I knew what to expect. The water meter was on but the tap timer I had installed was leaking a little and I went to turn it off and fix the seal. But it wouldn’t budge – and I knew that taking the grandpa wrench to it was most likely going to snap it. So I called the homeowner out, explained the situation (the water had […]

Why Doesn’t My Reticulation Come On?!

If your retic doesn’t come on then it will usually be one of a few common problems. 1. The controller is faulty. If there is a display on the controller then it is less likely that this is the issue, but it could be a faulty terminal or circuit board. 2. The master solenoid has seized. It has got stuck shut and needs replacing. 3. There is a broken wire to the master solenoid or a broken common wire. If you have done some digging in the yard then you may have accidentally struck wires. They are only 24v so […]

After the Bobcat…

I often get called to go in and fix the retic after the bobcat has been thru and done his work. Today I was in Butler and the bobcat had smashed thru the main line, broken the wiring as well as ripping up most of the pipe down one side of the rear. It didn’t help that the area was full of roots and that the client wasn’t completely sure on where he wanted things to go… Add to that a 3 hour deadline and intermittent rain and it was potentially a difficult day. But we got the main line […]

Lawn and Irrigation in Eglinton

So I quoted this job on Tuesday and as the client wanted to get it done asap I did it today instead of going surfing… The bobcat got there yesterday and dug out the sand and spread the soil. The retic was installed – two stations using precision nozzles as the water pressure was pretty average and one station wasn’t going to cut it. I didn’t even bother getting the trencher off the trailer for this one as the sand was soft and digging was easy. From there it was a case of screeding and laying the lawn. This is […]

Reticulation off the Tap in Alkimos

So you haven’t got any way of getting water to your back yard other than using a tap? Here’s a set up that can enable you to get two stations of retic functioning well. Start by removing the garden tap and then screw a 15ml brass T piece into the outlet. Then use a 15-20ml nipple in the tee to connect the ball valve, which will allow you to isolate this retic if you ever need to. From the ball valve you will need a 20-20ml nipple to allow connection of the digital controller. This one is a Rainmaster and […]

My Reticulation Doesn’t Come On At All

Ok so nothing works? Here is a series of checks to eliminate the most obvious possibilities: 1. The first thing to check is whether the control box has power and is functioning. I know this sounds obvious, but firstly check for a display. if there is no digital display then the controller may be fried. 2. If there is a display check for power. Put the leads of a multimeter on common and master/pump terminals and see if you get at least 24 volts. If not then you have a tripped RCD, or your transformer may have malfunctioned. If this […]
