The Irritrol Kiwdial Fuse Issue

Ok – possibly the single most common issue I hit each year is this problem. First up – there is no fuse and no battery in the controller! Silly I know – to have a ‘fuse’ message and a battery symbol at the same time. The average DIY would look for a dodgy fuse or a faulty battery. What the message actually means is that there is either a fault in the controller or a fault in a solenoid. The way to determine the issue is simply to remove wires and keep resetting the controller and testing it. If it […]

What is the Best Type of Sprinkler?

A lot of people ask me what the best sprinklers are, and the answer is that it depends on the job it needs to do. Here are some pros and cons of various types of sprinklers: Standard Toro/Rainbird pop-ups:  are good sprinklers in that distribute a lot of water in a short space of time and they are cheap and easy to replace. If well maintained the sprinkler body and seals can easily last 5 years. Their negative is that their spray can mist and get easily blown by the wind. Gear Drives – Gear drives are tough and are generally used […]

New Retic & Turf in Carine

What do you do when you retire?… Some people play golf, others travel but for today’s job my client in Carine dug out 50 cubic metres of his front yard by hand as preparation for new retic and turf. Wow… yeah… 50 cubes is a lot! So once he had finished it looked like this. That’s a lot of dirt to remove by hand and it meant we needed 26 cubes of special lawn mix brought in to get the right level for the Sir Walter Buffalo. Here’s it all screeded and levelled with the turf ready to go this […]

Irritrol Kiwkdial Fuse Message?

Every summer one of the most common requests we get is to fix the ‘fuse message’ on Irritrol Kiwkdial controllers. The message flashes and shows a battery symbol (even though the device has no battery) and it will not operate the retic. The short answer to what is happening is one of two things: a) The controller is on the way out. If it does this intermittently and if the display is shaking then count on it being the controller. b) There is a problem with a solenoid and it is sending a message back to the controller telling it […]

Warranties on Control Boxes

So your control box has stopped working? Chances are it will be covered by warranty as most have two years of factory warranty and if a product simply fails we will replace it at no cost to you. However sometimes boxes fail as a result of user error. The box in the image is just over one year old and ordinarily would be replaced under warranty, except that it is evident that the digital panel has been exposed to the weather. The telltale sign is the greenish colour the panel has turned. It should be the same grey as the […]

How Long Should My Sprinklers Be on For?

This is not what you want your lawn to look like! Currently the Water Authority is advertising on TV that sprinklers should be on for 10 minutes per station, which is somewhat misleading. I had a client recently send me this photo of her new lawn saying she is struggling to keep it alive on the Water Authority’s recommendations. I’m not surprised. She has Toro Precision nozzles which need to run for 30 minutes each time operate to apply 10mls. So here’s the deal… Sprinkler run times depend on the types of sprinklers used.   The goal is to get […]

One Station of Reticulation Is Stuck on

A common problem at this time of year is for one station to remain on while the system goes thru its cycle. Or you may have a constant weep around sprinklers Depending on what type of solenoid you have it is most likely going to be a faulty diaphragm. Usually it is best just to replace the entire solenoid and be sure that all will work well for a few years to come. If you wish to try and replace the diaphragm then remove the top half of the solenoid (you may be able to screw it off if it […]
